The Portuguese Language Centre in Lyon

The Portuguese Language Centre in Lyon opened on 2 May 2001 at the Lumière University - Lyon 2.

By 6:30pm took place the official opening of the exhibition Eça de Queirós - Marcos Biográficos e Literários, presented to the public by the writer Nuno Júdice who highlighted Eça de Queirós' legacy. The Portuguese language students from this department read words by Quierós, renowed for works such as Os Maias, in both Portuguese and French.

This is region where we find the second largest Portuguese community in France. Camões, I.P. is well aware of this fact, as most Portuguese language students there are of Portuguese descent.

The Centre is therefore established to offer both teachers and students the means for increasing their knowledge in this area, as well as for providing cultural activities that will promote the use of Portuguese language in this region.

The Portuguese Language Centre in Poitiers

The Portuguese Language Centre / Camões, I.P. at the University of Poitiers opened in 17 October 2005.

The opening was attended by writers Agustina Bessa-Luís and Lídia Jorge, who congratuated everyone who made this centre possible. The Portuguese Language Centre at the University of Poitiers was born from the significant relevance that the Portuguese language acquired at the University of Poitiers, which hosts a Portuguese lectureship dating back to 1936.

The Centre, now open to all students, teachers and the general public with an interest in Portuguese language and culture, is located next to the Portuguese Studies department. It is equipped with multimedia resources and media for researching and studying Portuguese language.

The Sá de Miranda Academic Chair

The scientific projects of this academic chair are organised in two main research lines, in partnership with two institutions - the Centre de Recherches sur les Littératures et la Sociopoétique (CELIS EA1002) and  the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH), at Clermont-Ferrand:

Dynamique des genres littéraires

The concept of the literary genre is regarded as process which is in constant working in progress, thus rejecting its characterisation as a static concept or a simple label, or even a being gifted with "organic" life. In this context, this academic chair sets out two strategies:

  • We support the presence of of Portuguese language experts in collective projects;
  • We co-organise projects, in partnership with other organisations, where the priority is Portuguese language and culture.
Lusophonie et interculturalité

This research line is supported by the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (MSH) and it is a valuable asset for both undergraduate and graduate students in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies (area Média et médiation culturelle). It takes form in seminars that can be validated as credits: the Sá de Miranda Academic Chair seminar and the Média et médiation culturelle seminar.

Since its establishment in 2004, the Sá de Miranda Academic Chair has an academic board comprised of professors from different French and international institutions: Francisco Bethencourt (King’s College), Paulo Motta Oliveira (University of São Paulo), Anne-Marie Quint (Université de Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle), José Augusto Cardoso Bernardes (University of Coimbra).

Solange Parvaux Academic Chair

Objectives

Established in July 2011 a co-operation protocol entered into between the University of Paris 3- Sorbonne Nouvelle and Camões, I.P., the Solange Parvaux academic chair was set to:

  • support and promote dissemination activities of Portuguese language, culture and literature;
  • create initiatives to reinforce the teaching programmes of Portuguese language, culture and literature, as well as scientific research in lusophone studies;
  • train and refresh young researchers from the University of Paris 3 with grants awarded by Camões, I.P.;

The core of the Solange Parvaux Academic Chair is centered on the work developed by Portuguese language experts at Paris 3, with an active intervention on collective projects where the priority is the Portuguese literature and culture.

Thus, the scientific projects of this academic chair are in tune with the activities of the Centre de Recherches sur les Pays Lusophones (CREPAL, EA 3421) at the Département d'Études Ibériques et latino-américaines of the Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle.

The Centre, officially established in 1997, brings together teachers, researchers and post-graduate students in the areas of Portuguese, Brazilian and African studies (countries with Portuguese as official language) working next to teachers, researchers and students from the universities of Paris IV, Paris VIII, Brest, Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon, Lille, Pau, as well as Portuguese, Brazilian and African universities. In this context, several conferences have been organised in the last few years, featuring:

  • "Audaces et défigurations" Colloque Agustina Bessa Luís 20 - 22 January 2011;
  •  La fête dans le monde lusophone : le Carnaval et son cortège 24 - 26 June 2010;
  • Fêtes de cour dans le Royaume et dans l'Empire portugais 19 June 2009;
  • Le paysage urbain dans le monde lusophone 12 - 13 December 2008

Camões, I.P. provides news on future cultural and scientific events in this website, with the support of the Solange Parvaux Academic Chair at Paris 3.

The story behind SOLANGE PARVAUX

Solange Parvaux was Inspector-General for Portuguese education in France during 1973 - 1997.

The teached at the University of Argel from 1965 to 1971 and at the University of Paris III - Sorbonne Nouvelle from 1971 to 1981.

In 1973, Solange Parvaux created ADEPBA (Association pour le Développement des Etudes Portugaises, Brésiliennes et des Pays de l’Afrique lusophone). In that same year, the French Ministry of Education appointed her the role of dinamising the Portuguese education in secondary schools.

For many years in her life, she commited herself enthusiastically to disseminating Portuguese language and culture, taking part in several national and international conferences: at the Senate in 1986, working together with the University of Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle: Les Images Réciproques France-Brésil; in May 1992, at the National Assembly, with ADEPBA: Les Images réciproques France-Portugal. In November 2005, she presided the academic commission organising the conference "La mondialisation linguistique, un nouveau regard : la langue portugaise, le Brésil, la lusophonie" at the Brésil/Brésils (AFAA) event.

Simultaneously, she published several works related with Portuguese language. She also organised the Portuguese language textbook used in secondary education, named Espaços, with the collaboration of Olga Ballesta, Françoise Beaucamp and Agnès Levécot (CRDP Bordeaux, 1998). The ‘Pocket Langues pour Tous’ collection published Le Portugais tout de suite ! (2003) ; Pratiquez le Portugais - Portugal, Brésil, Afrique (2004) ; Contes et chroniques d’expression portugaise - Portugal-Brésil-Afrique (Bilingue, 2004), with the collaboration of Jorge Dias da Silva and Jacqueline Penjon; "40 leçons pour parler le portugais " (2006).

Her last work, Vocabulaire portugais Portugal/Brésil, with the collaboration of Jorge da Silva and Nina A. Mabuchi, presented very few days before her death, was published in 2007.

Brief history

This centre opened in 1995 by joint order of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance. Its activities are centred on two types of intervention: teaching Portuguese as a foreign language and as a language for international communication and to promote Portuguese cultural activities in France.

14344 01

The centre organises and supports a regular events programme either on its own premises or in collaboration with other partners such as libraries, cinemas, theatres, publishers, universities or other institutions from France or other countries in the Community. Subjects cover various areas of interest, including literature, social sciences, history, economics, architecture, theatre, dance, visual arts and photography. Portuguese and French personalities are regularly invited to conferences, round-tables and debates on these subjects.

Anther priority is publishing the work of Portuguese authors in France, with help offered to those authors with the launch of their books, along with readings and feedback from readers.

One important area under development is Lusophony and the Portuguese-speaking countries, in collaboration with the embassies of those countries in Paris.

One the cultural centre’s facilities is an exhibition hall where the work of Portuguese artists in the areas of plastic arts and photography are showcased, along with work by French artists connected to Portugal.

Temporary Exhibitions

14344 02

he visibility of the Camões Institute has been greatly enhanced due to its participation in exhibitions held at venues like Expolangues and Salon du Livre, plus its active presence at the CCPF Theatre Festival. Its profile has also grown on account of its support for Portuguese authors, as well as its presence at the Cultural Centres Forum (which unites cultural centres with members of the European modern languages community) and at FICEP (The International Forum for Foreign Centres in Paris) which organises the annual Foreign Cultures Week in Paris.

Portuguese Courses

Courses at the Camões Institute in Paris comprise at least six levels of proficiency, from beginners right up to advanced learners.

Other options for those seeking to further immerse themselves in the language  include courses of oral expression, translation and studying contemporary Portuguese literature.

Intensive courses also take place throughout the year for those who have an apprenticeship or overseas trip in the pipeline.

There’s a great variety of reasons why students of many different nationalities want to learn Portuguese at the centre, where the majority are French.

Another course is specifically designed for Portuguese descendants with three different proficiencies up to advanced level. These students are eligible for a discount.
