Portuguese Cultural Centre

The centre opened on the 17th of May 1999.

The Luxembourg government donated the premises and helped with the centre’s inauguration. The Portuguese government is reponsible for its maintenance, staff and funding of large-scale initiatives in order to promote the Institute.

The intention was to create a space for cultural encounters where interested people can discuss ideas through a cultural exchange between the two countries.

The main aspects of interest are the organisation of exhibitions, shows and conferences dedicated to the promotion of the Portuguese language and culture, as well as the library which offers free Internet access and allows people to borrow books and take them home.

Other aspects are the importance of the Portuguese community in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the intention of increasing the local population’s knowledge of Portugal, including Portuguese residents and their descendants.

The two countries are seeing an increase in the amount of co-operation between some of the most prestigious cultural institutions in Luxembourg, as well as partners and sponsors from the public and private sectors, which in turn creates more visibility and an improved level of organisation of the many activities planned each year.

The main aim and biggest challenge of the Portuguese Cultural Centre in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is the promotion of the Portuguese culture and language and the influence this can have on young people.

To achieve these goals, the centre is focused on establishing a programme of activities based on the highest standards of quality representative of the reality and high cultural value both in a modern and historical sense.
