Reading Promotion in the Digital Age

The main objectives of this course are: to broaden the understanding of reading learning processes among professionals and citizens interested in the promotion of reading, analyzing the paradigm shift that occurred in the 21st century, resulting from the permanent supply of resources in digital support; to allow a reasoned analysis of the factors that contribute to the acquisition (or inhibition) of reading skills and habits; to make available the results of scientific research on reading and literacy in a synthetic form; to contribute to the effectiveness of reading promotion practices.
Aims of the course
- To contribute to broaden the understanding of reading learning processes among professionals and citizens interested in the promotion of reading, analyzing the paradigm shift that occurred in the 21st century, resulting from the permanent offer of resources in a digital form;
- To allow a reasoned analysis of the factors which contribute to the acquisition (or inhibition) of reading skills and habits at the various stages of life;
- To make the results of scientific research on reading and literacy available in a synthetic, accessible and transferable way for the programming of concrete practices both in school and in family contexts;

To contribute to the effectiveness in reading promotion practices, through the dissemination of policies, projects and activities developed in different national and international contexts, with proven value by the evaluation.
Course structure and teaching methods
Themes of the sessions (program):
- Reading - an essential skill. A brief history of reading;
- The long road to universal access to reading;
- Reading resources and practices in the 21st century;
- Workshop;
- The learning of reading - analysis of theories and research results;
- The acquisition and consolidation of reading competence - the action of the school, the family, the community;
- Analysis of policies, programs and projects to promote reading and literacy;
- Workshop;
- Programming of projects / activities to promote reading - the choice of books and digital resources appropriate to the target audience;
- Programming of reading promotion projects/activities - the design of activities appropriate to the resources, context, and time available:
- Programming of reading promotion projects/activities - the evaluation of the effects on the competences and reading habits of the participants (children, youth or adults);
- Workshop;
- Presentation and discussion of project proposals;
- Assessment.
Tuition fee
200 €.
In the case of teachers from the network of Portuguese teaching abroad and cooperation agents of Camões, I.P. the cost of the course is 160 euros.
Course certification
- The course is worth 1.8 credits by the Conselho Científico-Pedagógico da Formação Contínua (Ministry of Education - Continuous Training of Teachers) to teachers of early childhood education and elementary school teachers. In addition, 8 ECTS will be awarded.
- For the purposes of accreditation of teacher training in Spain, the certificate states the number of training hours of the course.
